Western Kansas is famous worldwide for its amazing sunsets and fierce storms. Photographer Jill Van Doren Rolo captures that drama in her collection, Images by Van Doren Rolo, and this weekend she’ll be presenting them to the public in an exhibition at The Studio and Kansas Art Gallery.
Lush green hills, dynamic cloud formations, and star-filled skies are Van Doren Rolo’s inspiration and she finds all that and much more throughout the state of Kansas, including Trego County. With crystal clear imagery and an eye for drama, she contrasts the Earth’s amazing natural forces with the luxurious colors found in a prairie’s serene landscape.
Jill Van Doren Rolo came to appreciate the beauty of our landscape as a child on horseback rides with her father. Her ancestors arrived in our county in the late 1800s and built a farmstead near WaKeeney. That connection to the land has not been lost on Van Doren Rolo, who began her photographic journey in junior high with an instamatic. Since then it’s grown to include work in both the public and private sectors, but it is the natural beauty of a Kansas prairie that continues to draw out her most inspired images.
“I believe that it’s the roads less traveled that offer the best opportunities to see the beauty of the Kansas prairie.”
